Join me for an afternoon drive from Fontana to the Ristorante Paoletti in Highlands, NC with stops at the two falls on the way there. Ristorante Paoletti is a highly regarded Italian cuisine restaurant with a wide range of offerings including small plates, appetizers, pasta, main dishes, seafood specialties and desserts. A sample menu HERE
After we leave Fontana, we will take a spirited drive down Hellbender, through Franklin and then to Dry Falls. Once there we will park and take multiple trips with a subset of cars a short distance down the road to Bridal Veil Falls, where we will have a nice photo op with the cars behind the falls. Once all cars have had a shot at Bridal Veil Falls and those who wish have explored Dry Falls, we will head to Highlands for dinner at Ristorante Paoletti. There is angle parking on both sides and in the center of Main Street where the restaurant is located, and the manager indicated that plenty of parking will normally be available there.
This drive will not return to Fontana in time for Bingo, but I have every intention of being back in time for the fireworks. The return trip will NOT be spirited as many, if not all, participants will have consumed some spirits (responsibly please!)
Dry Falls are 80 foot high falls that explode as a free-falling wall of water down to a rocky gorge below. You can actually walk behind them and stay relatively dry.
Bridal Veil Falls is a 45 foot waterfall with a short curve of roadway behind the falls. It has the distinction of being the only waterfall in the state that one can drive a vehicle under.
